Join us for a literary adventure inspired by “Bicycling with Butterflies” by Sara Dykman and “Flight Behavior” by Barbara Kingsolver to witness the breathtaking monarch butterfly migration!

Trace the path of the Western monarch butterfly to the misty oyamel fir forests straddling Michoacán and Estado de México, where millions of butterflies gather in one of nature’s most awe-inspiring migrations.

Your adventure begins in vibrant Mexico City, where we’ll dive into the city’s rich tapestry of food, art, and contemporary culture. Your luxurious room will be nestled in the beautiful Roma neighborhood, filled with trees, bookstores, caes and wine bars.

Venturing beyond the city, we’ll trek through forested trails known mostly to locals, guided by experts who offer a deep connection to the land and its stories. Our path leads to the breathtaking Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve—a UNESCO World Heritage Site—where the air hums with delicate wings and magic.

This trip is a celebration of transformation, migration, and the threads that connect us—from ecology to culture and community.

Space is limited! Only 12 travelers will join this intimate journey.

Trip Highlights

Few travelers will ever walk among a billion butterflies. Will you?

  • Witness one of Earth’s great wonders: millions of monarchs filling the sky in a UNESCO sanctuary

  • Wend horseback into lesser know roosting areas, some guaranteed to feel like your own private sanctuary.

  • Soak up Mexico City’s vibrance: art, food, bookshops, cafes, beautiful parks, and historically rich districts.

  • Float Xochimilco’s canals – Kayak past vibrant trajineras, eat with Axolotl researchers, and observe a living piece of Mexico’s heritage

  • Travel at the perfect moment: mid-February, when monarch butterfly colonies are at their peak and forests pulse with life under rays of sunlight

  • Stay in soulful, boutique accommodations – Character-rich hotels with style, comfort, and thoughtful amenities throughout your journey

  • Find your rhythm: Each day has intentional, unhurried solo time to read, explore, and recharge in your own way.

  • Enjoy a one of a kind experience, not generic & copied: every stop has been handpicked for meaning, beauty, story, and experience. The places you'll visit can't be booked through an internet search.

  • Return changed: a rare journey of nature, culture, and personal transformation. Like the monarch migration itself, this adventure is merely the beginning of the next.

Field Notes (on butterflies and fitness)
  • When the weather is sunny and warm, the butterflies take flight as part of their mating ritual. They may even happily land on calm and patient humans.

  • On cool days the butterflies huddle together in clusters known as roots or bivouacs, resembling dry leaves.

  • Unlike the monarchs, you won’t have to physically fly 2,800 miles on this journey, but it will require a moderate fitness level. This expedition involves city walking, light hiking uphill, horseback riding…and of course, eating!

Keanna
Very personable customer service, selection and flexibility. The vehicle is way more comfortable than one of the bus tours and really a lot of fun. Mary Cate made several contacts leading up to the appointments and incorporated what I wanted to get from the experience. Could not recommend Fair Travel enough and can’t wait to come back.
